NetWare 7.0 na bazie Linuksa

CEO Novell’a (Jack Messman) w wywiadzie dla ComputerWorld wypowiadał się na temat przyszłych powiazań Novell’a z Linuksem. Jedno z jego sformułowan było na tyle niefortunne, że wywołalo ciekawą dyskusję w serwisie LWN.net.Linux is an immature operating system right now. It hasn’t had somebody like Novell worrying about making it robust, reliable… (Linux jest jeszcze niedojrzałym systemem operacyjnym. Nie miał jeszcze okazji wsparcia ze strony firmy takiej jak Novell, która uczyni go solidnym, niezawodnym… )
Jedną z osób wypowiadajacych się na forum jest Kristopher Magnusson – przewodniczacy rady zajmującej sie tematyką Open Source wewnątrz Novell’a (Novell’s Open Source Review Board). Z wypowiedzi Magnussona wynika, że w dużym skrocie NetWare 7.0 bedzie Linuksem rozszerzonym o specjalne usługi autorstwa Novella (usługi katalogowe, współdzielenie plikow, drukowanie).

Planowane jest także dalsze utrzymywanie klasycznego jądra (systemu) NetWare. Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że Novell zamierza zainwestować w Linuksa i rozwijać go jako platformę.
To chyba dość interesująca wiadomość dla firm wykorzystujących platformę NetWare i planujących dalszą rozbudowe infrastruktury.

My name is Kristopher Magnusson; I chair Novell’s Open Source Review Board that manages the use of open source software within Novell, and I am responsible for managing Novell’s open source community relations, among other things.
It’s clear to me from my perspective as a Novell insider that Novell management, including Jack Messman, clearly recognizes the tremendous value of Linux, despite anything that’s been said elsewhere. I sit in the Linux strategy meetings and Jack and the entire senior management team are genuinely excited about our new Linux direction. We plan to invest an enormous amount of money, time, and resources to enhance Linux. We are fervent believers in the strengths of Linux and the proof is our commitment to deliver NetWare services on Linux.
The real message here is what Novell is doing to enhance Linux with additional software that our customers want. What we plan to offer to our customers with NetWare 7.0 is an enhanced Linux with special services–industrial grade NetWare file, print, and directory services for the enterprise, combined with Linux’s proven reliability and scalability. We also will continue to offer the traditional NetWare kernel for our customers who wish to upgrade to the „classic” operating system.
